A Power Management Unit (PMU) is a microchip that controls the power functions of an electronics subsystem. An alternative name is a Power Management IC or PMIC. A PMU can be micro-controller based or state machine based. A PMU coordinates power sequencing, over and under voltage monitoring and orchestrates the control of power to other integrated circuits. A PMU can be responsible for power source selection (battery versus USB or wall adapter power). The PMU is often responsible for shutting down power to portions of the system during idle or sleep modes.
