Current mirrors can be created to track, multiply or attenuate a reference current. They can be thought of conceptually as a current controlled current source. An important property of a current mirrors is that they maintain a constant output current regardless of loading. Matching the characteristics of the components making up the mirror circuit is extremely important in order to create a mirror that maintains a fixed relationship to the reference current over voltage and temperature changes. As such, current mirrors are perfectly suitable for implementation in ASIC processes due to the high degree of mathcing that is possible in the ASIC.
