Asymmetric digital subscriber line is a digital data communications technology that provides for higher speed data communications over traditional phone lines compared to the a voiceband modem. A DSL splitter or filter allows a single telephone line to support both voice and data. Historically, ADSL services needed to be located within 2 miles (4 km) of the telephone exchange. Recently, ranges have been extended beyon 5 miles (8 km).
